Notes A gold dinar minted in Mahdia, Tunisia, in the year 380 / 990, during the caliphate of the Fatimid Caliph Al-Aziz (reigned 365-386 / 975-996). On the obverse of this coin appears in the middle within two concentric circles an inscription in cursive script of two lines: The first line reads: “There is no god but God, and Muhammad is the Messenger of God, upon the best of God’s chosen ones.” The second line reads: “Muhammad is the Messenger of God.” God sent him with guidance and the religion of truth to make it prevail over all religions, even if the polytheists hate it.” Written on the back of the piece within two concentric circles is a two-line writing: The first line reads: “Abdullah and his guardian Nizar, the Mighty Imam, by God, Commander of the Faithful.” The second line shows the name of the city of origin “Mahdiya” and the year of birth “380” AH.
