Notes
Asafkhan (died 1641) was an important person in the Mughal court. His father was Janjir's agent (prime minister). He was the brother of Janjir's favorite wife, Nur Jahan. His daughter, Mumtaz Mahal, was Shah Jahan's favorite wife and the woman for whom he built the Taj Mahal. She served as agent for Shah Jahan. Janjir was fond of giving the nobles of his court miniatures of portraits of him, which they would wear around their necks as a necklace, as he did. Asef Khan is in this painting as a sign of his love and also as a sign of loyalty to him. The upper part of the painting is shown larger than the rest of the painting in order to draw attention to the person's head, and for the same reason, the whites of the eyes are the only part of the painting that is colored.
