Notes This intriguing object was probably used to store food for a member of the military ruling class in late Middle Age Egypt and Syria while he travelled. The level of its owner is indicated by a leading piece or blazon repeated in medallions on the lid and body of the box. Perhaps it was a means of traveling light, and the lid was used in a secondary function as a plate when it was turned on its back under the handle and became a good-sized base for a food bowl. Just as it is today, this traveler’s bowl from the fifteenth century was also used to secure everything available at home.
