Notes
The military supremacy that helped extend Ottoman authority globally was based largely on the Janissaries - offensive infantry forces. As part of their dress, the Janissaries wore sock-shaped bonnets that were also worn on the forearm as an ornament, such as this rare silver-plated example, the slightly concave piece decorated with elaborate, geometric-worked designs bearing distinctive insignia and markings showing Janissary loyalty to the Sultan - most likely a spoon which indicates It was the ruler who served him his daily soup.
