Notes A porcelain bowl made of white quartz paste colored underglazes in brown, blue, green and red. Technically, the colorful knight-shaped decorations are an imitation of a type of Iranian ceramics known as minai, which literally means “enamelled,” a technique in which some colors are painted over the glaze and then installed by firing. Syrian potters were influenced by developments in Iran, but they lacked knowledge of the technique of working with enamel on ceramics, so they imitated the style. This bowl imitates the type of design used on Minai porcelain, with underglaze coloring using bright colors similar to enamel. On the bottom side of the bowl, there is illegible writing.
