Notes
During the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, a new style of enamelled ceramics called (Lajvardina) appeared in the era of the Ilkhanid dynasty in Iran. The word “lagvardina” means “lapis lazuli,” which in this case refers to the special deep blue color of the bowl’s background resulting from the cobalt-based glass. The bowl, which is supposed to have been made in Kashan, represents a fine example of this remarkable and precious technique. The polychrome decoration of the floral images arranged above the glass in a cross pattern is supported by elements of gold plating. The hemispherical shape of the bowl indicates the artistic influence of Yuan porcelain vessels from China.
