Notes
The vase made of pottery dough is in the shape of a dromedary camel and there is a large vase on its hump and some on its body as well. The luster-painted decoration includes decorations, a camel saddle cloth, and also a medallion with a lyre. Roving craftsmen from Fatimid Egypt and Ayyubid Syria could have created the luster-painted vessels produced in the town of Kashan in the late twelfth century onwards. It is now agreed that these lustrous wares were the product of the city's firing kilns, which were produced over a continuous period extending over a century. During all this time, the city appears to have successfully continued its monopoly on this industry and exported little, if anything, to the borders of the region today called Iran (for example, in Central Asia or Afghanistan), in which it also had very little.
