Notes This cast copper astrolabe was used to determine time by observing the positions of the stars and the sun, determining the direction of the Qibla, and calculating the constellations. On the edge of the back is written: Made (or made by) Hamid bin Al-Khidr Al-Khujandi [in] the year 374 AH [984-955 AD]. Although there is no evidence of where the astrolabe was made or by whom, Al-Khajandi was a prominent maker of astronomical instruments, an astronomer, and a mathematician.
