Notes
It is not known precisely when the construction of “Al-Bab Al-Saghir” began within the walls of the city of Muscat. However, the door appears in De Resende’s drawing of the city of Muscat, in Antonio Bocarua’s manuscript, entitled (The Book of the State of East India), dated in the year (41-1042 AH / 1632 AD). In the past, the door represented an entrance to the city from the south; It leads directly to Muscat Souq; This is across a bridge above the moat surrounding the old city. It is believed that (the Small Gate) was the main entrance to the city before the expansion works of Bab Al-Tawyan in the century (14 AH / 20 AD), which was later called the Great Gate, which is attested by the plan of (Muscat Port) by the French officer, engineer, and geographer (Louis Françoise Gregory de Lafite de Braisser), prepared in the year (91-1192 AH / 1778 AD).
