| Notes | Water cooler tray stands on three legs and has circular grooves to hold clay jugs for cooling. The inscriptions testify that the tray was made for the Mamluk Sultan Al-Nasir Muhammad Ibn Qalawun, who was a generous patron of art. The decoration is characterized by gold inlay and the use of large, blooming lotus flowers. This type of Chinese design was introduced from Mongol Iran to Fatimid Egypt in the early decades of the fourteenth century. |
