Notes
The piece is a hammered gold sword hilt, elaborately carved in relief with panels of scrollwork and a band of niello engraving (a black mineral mixture of sulphur, copper, silver and lead that is poured into the engraved area and heated to form a contrasting background) and engraving surrounding the opening of the blade. Lion heads adorn the quillions (the horizontal elements of the grip that protect the hand), the openings of the grip and blade are surrounded by carefully worked loops of gold rope, and the socket of the handle is octagonal, its panels alternating between the ends of the overall engraved scrollwork with single-minute arabesque designs in the center. The cross-section of the socket of the handle is octagonal.
