Notes The miniature depicts a tropical daytime landscape surrounded by six male figures wearing the distinctive costumes of Shah Abbas I (1588-1629). The remarkable precision of the drawing is demonstrated by the range of subdued color, the golden outlines, and the beautiful Nasta`liq line of Persian poetry: “Do not drink from the cup of wine, for every drop is your blood/Do not listen to the music where every melody is a story of sorrow/The night has not fallen and the party of the drunkards has neither lamp nor lamp/Join us, the servants, where the greatest justice is mirth” (translated into English from the Roman text by Ferrol Bagesu 1987). The poetry and the image are full of Sufi symbolism.
