Notes These pages are from the Al-Bustan Edition, an educational poetic story composed of moral stories and anecdotes written in the mid-thirteenth century by the Persian poet Saadi. The manuscript was produced in Iran in 1649 for the ruler of Bukhara, Abd al-Aziz Ibn Nasr Muhammad. But the decorations that fill the margins of almost every page were added later, and, curiously, they are positioned perpendicular to the text and none of them appear to be connected to the text in any way. Some are scenes of animals (often mythical Chinese creatures) placed among plants, while other decorations are scenes of delicately drawn people engaged in various activities such as purchasing goods in the market.
Sample Text “Bustan Al-Saadi” is part of Discover the collections of Islamic art. Museum Without Borders, 2026. https://islamicart.museumwnf.org/database_item.php?id=object;EPM;ir;Mus21;29;ar
