Notes This path, which was in the Mustafa Lalabash Mosque in Damascus, is a chair-like structure. The base is made of marble stone decorated with geometric decorations consisting of colored marble stones and shell pieces. As for the upper section, it is a marble panel on which are engraved two luxurious lines in Diwani script (a type of soft calligraphy known in the Ottoman era), and there is a strip of floral decoration between these two lines. The central rectangular panel is supported on both sides by two areas of engraved and decorated marble. From the inscription, it is stated that this quarter (a quarter is a unit of measurement for water) was erected and made public (for all people) in honor of Sultan Suleiman bin Sultan Selim Khan, by the Supreme Court, Mustafa Lala Pasha, in the year 971 / 1564. It is clear that this date was an important date, as it was recorded numerically and alphabetically in three places within the text. It is the date when Mustafa Lalabasha obtained the position in the Levant. Mustafa Lalabash remained in this important position for five years, and included among his endowment in Damascus a mosque and a new khan supplied with water. During the rule of Sultan Selim II (974-982 / 1566-1574), Mustafa appointed Lalabasa commander of the military forces that conquered Cyprus in 978 / 1570. This conquest was one of the most brilliant Ottoman victories. The text on the path reads as follows: “The life of this common quarter, may God make it the most useful in the time of the most wonderful Sultan, Sultan Suleiman Khan, son of Sultan Selim Khan, may God make him grow The most exalted on the bed of the Sultanate, the exalted Janab Mustafa Pasha. May God grant him the intercession of the intercessor and heir to the Ottoman kingdoms, Sultan Selimkhan. The most wonderful. May God illuminate his state with his brightest light and sign, word and meaning, a history that dates back to the year nine hundred and seventy-one 971 AH.”
