Notes
This full-sized inscription is the first of three lines written on the Mizab al-Rahma - the rain gutter located on the Kaaba - which was commissioned by the Ottoman Sultan Abdul Majid in 1856 and installed in 1859. The current inscription, which is a wonderful interlacing of letter shapes, bears witness to the skill of the master calligrapher Abdullah Zuhdi, who was known as the scribe of the Two Holy Mosques. Sultan Abdul Majeed also ordered Abdullah Zuhdi to redesign the inscriptions in the mosque. The Prophet in Medina. He began work there in 1856 and it took him seven years to complete. Zuhdi spent the last part of his life in Cairo, where he redesigned the patterns on the many embroidered fabrics sent from Cairo to Mecca with the Kiswa.
