Notes
A primitive model of an Iznik "grape leaf" painted in blue and white. Its design was modeled in the 15th century on an original Chinese model consisting of three bunches of grapes amid vine leaves. This is because the original Chinese ceramic designs were in the form of clusters and vine leaves surrounded by twelve branches of flowers, while this model contains only eleven branches of flowers. It is also important to note that the Iznik potter preferred not to imitate the frame in the basic style of the early 15th century (Ming dynasty), and instead used the style of the 14th century (Yuan dynasty). Iznik potters were able to recognize and be influenced by Chinese ceramics. This was after Sultan Selim al-Shadid (r. 917-26 / 1512-20) conquered Tabriz in Iran, Damascus in Syria, and Cairo in Egypt, where he got his hands on large quantities of Chinese porcelain and returned them to Istanbul, the Ottoman capital, between 919-922 / 1514-1517.
