Notes
In the Raqqa region, groups of wooden pieces were found that decorated the royal official halls in the palaces. These collections can be classified into three categories, according to the style of manufacture and decoration. The first group's decorations are engraved, colored, and gilded, and they resemble reality, as designs such as leaves and flowers appear in semi-realistic shapes. The second group is executed in an oblique engraving style, so that the edges and surfaces of these shapes appear curved rather than sharp. This style also appeared in Samarra 3 and is attributed to it. The third group has decorations carved vertically, so that the upper and lower surfaces appear flat, while the decorations have sharp edges. This piece belongs to the latter group, as its decoration is engraved using the vertical engraving method. It was decorated with inscriptions in calligraphy, which read: “Commander of the Faithful.” The piece shows signs of fire.
