Notes
These are two wall paneling elements, made of porcelain with a metallic lustre, and were originally shaped like a cross. The geometric decoration is made up of circles that include a shape that could suggest a fish or a flower with its stem, drawn with a white brush on a dark green (olive) background. The calligraphic decoration includes the inscription “Yemen”, repeated several times, written in Kufic letters and executed in white on a yellow background with a metallic lustre. According to c. Marcy, “This ceramics was inspired by the Abbasid East, which in turn borrowed it from the ancient Semitic or Byzantine civilizations.” In general, these crosses were joined with other elements, such as octagonal stars or diamonds, to form the wall covering.
