Notes
Glitter painting is a complex technique that requires many baking stages, and the last stage is done without oxygen. It was used to decorate ceramics, as well as glass, and was of great value due to its luxurious and iridescent effect, which gave a shine resembling gold and silver. This was done until the manufacture of vessels from precious metals was banned in Islam. The current fragments demonstrate the wide variety of shapes, colors and designs used by pottery makers in Fustat during the Fatimid era.
