Notes
The piece is a glass flask that is distinguished by its elegance and the beauty of its proportions. This flask consists of a conical base that ends with a prominent ring at the bottom, a body with sloping shoulders whose lower part slopes inward, and a long, graceful neck that ends with a slightly curvy spout. The body of the flask is decorated with arabesque floral designs executed in enamel and gilding within three simple circles. These designs include mutated lotus flowers painted in white on a blue enamel background. The neck of the jug bears a gilded inscription in fine letters, in which the name of Sultan Al-Nasir Saladin Yusuf appears. The mouth of the jug is decorated with simple decorative bands. The jug, as is clear from the inscriptions on it, belongs to the Ayyubid Sultan Al-Nasir Yusuf II, king of Aleppo and Damascus in the period 634-658 AH / 1237-1260 AD. The style of painting on glass with enamel is considered one of the decorative methods that was known in the Ayyubid era and spread in the Mamluk era. A good number of flasks camouflaged with enamel are distributed among the various museums of the world. There is one of these flasks in the Berlin Museum, and it shows drawings of knights playing polo. This flask dates back to the Ayyubid era in the 7th century AH / 13th AD and comes from Syria.
