Notes
The miniature displays on the page one of the main verses of the story “Yusuf and Zuleikha” by Jami. Zuleikha seduces Yusuf (depicted with flames emanating from the Prophet around his head) in her majestic palace where she declares her love to him. But the chaste Yusuf tries to escape and elude her. Zuleikha caught up with him and caught him at the door and grabbed the hem of his dress. The man wearing a golden crown was watching the scene from behind an open door to the left. Perhaps he was Zuleikha’s Egyptian noble husband. He bit his finger in surprise and on his mouth was a conditional gesture in a Persian miniature that expresses great astonishment. The expression, composition and style of the painting follow the famous miniature dating back to 1640 AD and attributed to the brush of the painter Moin Musawwar (1617-1702), a prominent teacher of the Isfahan school of painting. It is surprising that the miniature is painted on a page from a poetry album (or manuscript) from the late sixteenth century that contains poems by Sa’idi al-Shirazi (1203/1210-1291), a great Persian poet.
