Notes
The piece is an Umayyad coin bearing the Shahada, and was minted in the city of Jerash, which was part of Jund al-Urdun (one of five military and administrative provinces in the early Islamic period). On the face of the piece appears within concentric circles an Arabic inscription written in Kufic script, reading from right to left: “There is no god but God.” On the back of the piece appears within a circle of dots an Arabic inscription written in Kufic script, reading “Muhammad is the Messenger of God.” As for the inscriptions that appear on the margins between the two circles, it reads, “In the name of God, strike this penny with a pound.”
