Notes
This circular coin bears an inscription in Kufic letters on its face and back, which reads as follows: Obverse: circumference: “Muhammad is the Messenger of God whom He sent with guidance and the religion of truth to make it prevail over all religions” (Qur’an; Sura 9; verse 33). In the center, the text consists of three lines: “There is no god but / God alone / He has no partner.” Back: circumference: “In the name of God, this dinar was minted in the year eighty-six. And two hundred (899 AD). In the center, the text includes five lines as follows: “He conquered/Muhammad/Messenger/of God/Ibrahim.” This piece was struck during the reign of Ibrahim ibn Ahmad al-Aghlabi (period: 261-289 AH/874-902 AD), nicknamed Abu Ishaq Ibrahim II, who founded, in 263 AH/876 AD, the city of Raqqada, south of Kairouan. The Aghlabid gold coins of this period are distinguished by their circular shape, the absence of reference to the place of minting, and the use of the slogan “He conquered,” which the Aghlabids used to distinguish themselves from other ruling families, such as the Rustamids in Tahert, and the Idrisids in Fez. These dinars are also distinguished by their purity, from 98 to 99%, and their weight, which can be approximately 4.5 grams.
