Notes At the height of the production of Manises and Paterna, a taste for natural forms appears that demonstrates a gradual departure from the Hispano-Islamic tradition. Some of the designs are still very simple and very stylized, such as the flower heads used to decorate the bottoms of the “A in Maria” pieces, so named because of the Marian inscription in German Gothic letters. The regular category to which this plate belongs is based on groups of large dots, ranging in number from three to six, surrounded by a thin line. They are also drawn within oblique circular spaces, formed by thin encircling stems. The background of these circular spaces is decorated with small dots, and in some cases, as here, with another small central circle containing a cross ending in dots; For this reason, this category to which this dish belongs was called “the dotted category.” The dish, made using a wheel, shows a wide, flat wing, and a concave bottom with a decorative protrusion. It was covered with a wool-colored tin enamel, on top of which a decoration was achieved by successive burning, oxidized and reduced; While the bird stands out in cobalt blue, and the dots are gilded. From the Valencia workshops came out dishes of different sizes; Besides large-scale models such as the one presented here, there are smaller plates, decorated with stags, deer, parrots, fleur-de-lis, or crowned initials; These smaller plates were more widely used.
