Notes
The Mamluk princes adopted emblems of their state, often linked to their ceremonial roles, at court, which decorated the objects and buildings they ordered to be made. Here there are two golden crossbows against a red shield, which indicate that the owner of this lamp held the high rank of banduqadar (i.e., priest official) in the Mamluk court. The inscription says that the lamp was commissioned for the tomb of Aydkin al-Ala’i al-Bunduqdari, who died in Cairo in 1285.
