Notes
The painting of Sheikh Safi al-Din asking his disciples to accept honey and not meat from the villagers is one of fourteen paintings in the only known illustrated copy of the book (The Essence of Purity), which is a memoir of the biography of Sheikh Safi al-Din Ishak Ardabili (1252/3-1334) and gives detailed information about the life, sayings, virtues and miracles of Sheikh Safi al-Din, the spiritual founder of the Safavid dynasty (1501-1736). The book, The Essence of Purity, is a biography book containing life stories that are classified under two types. In Islamic literature, the term “remembrance” is used in biographical texts, and the biography of preachers and preachers is used in books about the lives of Sufis. The book, Jawhar al-Safa, contains actual information about the life of Sheikh Safi al-Din Ishak Ardabili, as well as Sufi and supernatural stories. It appears that it was the main source for the timeline of the Safavids at the beginning of their dynasty, as there are many copies of it and translations of it. The essence of serenity has an introduction, twelve chapters, and a conclusion, and each chapter contains many chapters, which include several short periods (tales).
