Notes Gemstones from the Museum's Collection This slab is today the only known piece of Iranian luster-glazed ceramics from the period 1220-1260 AD and the artistic merits of the piece are incomparable. The complex formation perfectly matches the plane of the eight-pointed star. The delicate coating with a brilliant amber-gold paint is enhanced by subtle accents of turquoise and blue over a background of light ivory, and the resulting color formation creates a wonderful decorative effect. The scene on the slab deserves special attention and, according to Vera Krachkovskaya and Leon Gozalyan, it may depict one of the legendary stories of Ferdowsi's epic Shahnameh (Book of Kings), the hunting scene of King Bahram Gur. The borders of the slab are inscribed in Persian and contain three verses of poetry by an unknown poet related to one-sided love. The date of the Islamic Hijri calendar is also indicated here: the month of Safar in the year 624, which corresponds to the period from late December to the end of February in the year 1227 AD. Such tiles, which are installed alternately on the walls with diagonal or straight intersections of blue or turquoise, decorate the interior of the rooms in the homes of the Iranian upper class.
