Notes While the composition appears to follow the classically decorated Persian carpet, there are a few special features that stand out: this is primarily because the carpet is relatively large and exceeds the usual shape of a major carpet in Persia during the 19th century. These rugs were placed in the center of the room and flanked by two narrow rugs with another medium-sized vertical rug placed at the upper end of the room. Moreover, traditional motifs, foreign elements such as tree branches, oak leaves and acorns catch the eye, as they decorate the middle inner blue field. Another unusual stylistic choice is the red cloud bands wrapped around the medallion and the black and brown divided leaf scrolls in the four corner compartments. Although these decorations are classical, they have a slightly "rococo" influence on the European viewer. The carpet dates from the Persian New Year 1313, i.e. March 20 or 21, 1896. It was made, as can be read in the cartouche, "by order of Shabestari." "It is therefore reasonable to assume that it was a New Year's gift."
