Notes This very old picture of the Mahmal ritual was printed in the form of a three-dimensional image (stereograph) and shows the Mahmal waddling along a narrow Cairo street between the crowded crowds and some of those standing near the place, their hands raised in supplication. Behind the horses is an entourage of officials carrying flags for the convoy departing for Hajj. This image was published by an American company in Washington called J.F. Jarvis, one of the many small 3D image producers in the late nineteenth century. Jarvis started out as a photographer using his own photos to create 3D scenes and later began publishing scenes from all over the world. This picture was sold to Underwood & Underwood. It is a company founded in 1881 and was known as the largest distributor of 3D images in the world until 1920 when it was sold to the Keystone View Company. Many of Underwood & Underwood's 3D images photographed areas in the Middle East covering landscapes and historical sites. This type of scene may have originally been sold as part of a box set with other views of Egypt.
