Notes
A large rectangular rug of the type known as the Ushaq medallion. The center of the carpet, on a red ground, is occupied by a large blue medallion in the shape of an oblong oval with dangling ornaments, repeated at both ends. The quarters above and below the central medallion are occupied by four elaborate secondary medallions that would have been 16-sided had they not been interrupted by the edge of the carpet. The medallions of the carpet contain arabesque patterns, while the red ground between them contains continuous floral patterns that fill the space without appearing to disappear behind the medallions. The tripartite frame consists of repeating floral patterns on a yellow, red and blue ground. The carpet's complex, abstract shape demonstrates the skill that Ottoman designers had in creating non-figurative designs.
