Notes This picture shows the preparation of the loader that leaves Cairo for Mecca. This is called bearing number 140 and the picture bears the signature of Abdullah’s brothers. Abdullah’s brothers were three Ottoman Armenian brothers who worked in photography studios in Istanbul, Cairo and Izmir. In 1862, they were named official royal photographers at the Ottoman court, giving them the right to use the first letters of the royal names. Their studio operated between 1858-99, and while they were appointed as photographers to Sultan Abdul Aziz and Sultan Abdul Hamid II, they were also entrusted with documenting the activities of the Ottoman Empire. This image was also copied on postcards and was also used in Saleh Subhi’s book (Visiting Mecca and Medina). The date 1304 AH appears on the mahmal with part of the name of Khedive Muhammad Tawfiq, which means that the mahmal was sent by order of Sultan Abdul Hamid II.
