Notes The piece consists of documents related to marriage written on the front and back of a sheet of paper. The document written on the front of the paper relates to the marriage of an individual from Jerusalem, and the document written on the back of the paper relates to the divorce of the same person from his wife. The earthworm caused part of the document to be eroded, which hindered its complete reading. The marriage document was written in seven lines, and it begins with the basmala on a single line, followed by the text of the marriage contract. The content of the contract is that Sheikh Sharaf Al-Din Yaqoub bin Al-Hajj Youssef bin Yaqoub from Al-Quds Al-Sharif has engaged to an adult virgin, a free Muslim woman from Hebron, free of legal impediments. It is noted that the bride's name was not mentioned in the contract, which was limited to mentioning the name of the place where the bride belongs, which is Hebron. We know that her name is Fatima from the divorce document written on the back of the paper. The contract states that the immediate dowry for this bride is 450 dirhams, and the deferred dowry is 150 dirhams. The contract also mentions that the bride’s representative in the marriage is Sheikh Qasim bin Musa bin Omar Al-Ghazi. The contract was concluded in the presence of two witnesses: Mr. Sharaf al-Din Hamza bin al-Sayyid Abd al-Rahman bin Ali al-Mughrabi, and another witness whose name cannot be distinguished except for the family name, which is “Al-Usta.” At the end of the contract, the signature of the witness appears, and on the left side of the text is written, “Her representative married her to him in a legal way, in my presence, written by Ahmad bin al-Naqib al-Hanbali.” Two documents were written on the back of the paper, five lines for each document, at the end of which the names of two witnesses were mentioned. The first document reads, “Praise be to God, on the fifth of the month of Muharram in the year seven hundred and ninety-five, Jacob, the aforementioned husband, testified to him [that] he divorced his aforementioned wife, Fatima... yesterday in his history, then he regretted it and took her back to his wife and concluded his marriage, a legal review, in his legal wording, in the presence of his witnesses, and he testified about it in his history above.” The second document on the back of the paper shows that a settlement was made between the husband and his wife to return her to his wife, on the condition that he pay her the deferred dowry. The document recorded, with the testimony of two witnesses, that the deferred dowry had been paid, so that she would not demand this dowry in the event of another divorce or the death of the husband.
