Notes
The piece is a wall inscription found in its original location in Aqaba Castle. The side walls of the entrance leading to the courtyard of Aqaba Castle are surrounded by an Arabic inscription band in Naskh script. The inscription refers to the construction (or rebuilding) of the citadel by the architect Khayir Bey Al-Ala'i during the rule of the Mamluk Sultan Qansuh Al-Ghuri (906 - 922 / 1500 - 1516), who was known for maintaining the security of the lands and waters of Syria and Egypt. Unfortunately, the section of the inscription that gives the date of construction is partially missing, and the date may be in the year 910 or 920 / 1504 or 1514. The inscription states that the citadel was built by Khayr Bey Al-Ala'i, whom the Egyptian historian Ibn Iyas describes as "the architect" or "the builder."
