Notes
During the middle of the AH 10th century / AD 16th century, this richly crafted fabric gives a vivid idea of the multifaceted activity of the court of the Ottoman Sultan Suleiman (reigned during AH 926-972 / AD 1520-65). The piece may have been a pillow cover for a throne or a sofa. The scarlet satin fabric is embroidered with silk and gold and silver threads. The open flowers, outlined in a thick line, and the pointed leaves are characteristic of the Ottoman court style. They are arranged in the form of quadrilaterals of live roosters around a complex eight-lobed medallion. The quality of the design, the delicate embroidery, and the extensive use of silver and gold metallic threads reveal the excellent level of Ottoman imperial fabrics.
