Notes
This two-handed earthenware water jug is decorated with stamped patterns, gold-painted figures, and Arabic letters. Its long neck expands at the top, and it contains the remains of a pottery strainer from the inside. The curved base is decorated with a stamped floral pattern. The numerous types of decoration – gilding, geometric and floral stamps/prints divide the jug into a number of distinct sections of decoration. The gold plating on the jug is most likely oil paint. Some Arabic editions say that it was sealed with tin, a type of red clay believed to have a medicinal function in the Middle Ages, and it is most likely that the jug was used for such purposes.
