Notes
The mille fiori (thousand flowers) technique was rediscovered in the eighth or ninth century in Mesopotamia and may have been used in the production of pieces for the Abbasid caliphs in Baghdad and Samarra. A number of surviving bowls and tiles show that the technique was used in both local furnishings and interior decoration, and examples such as the one shown here demonstrate the complexity and scope of the work of Abbasid glassmakers.
