Notes This page is from a scattered copy called “The Second Small” from Firdawsi’s epic Shahnameh (Book of Kings). It shows the period dating back to the reign of the Sassanian king Bahram (or Vahram) V (r. 420-38). It shows the visit made by Bahram Gur to the house of one of his subjects. Bahram Gur (meaning the great hunter) performed great feats with his great bow, and this time killed a pair of wild lions that had preyed on Mahyar’s large flock of sheep. This shepherd does not know Bahram and speaks to him, wanting to thank him for his courage in shooting. He praises the ruling Shah, Bahram - who is still ignorant of his personality - and decides to visit the jewelry maker’s house, where the shepherd says that he will hear the melodies and the sound of the harp. In fact, Mahyar had only one daughter who played the harp, and she did so while sitting opposite her father, who had a white beard and the Shah.
