Notes
Ma'an Castle was one of the stops for the Levantine Hajj caravans. The castle takes the shape of a square with a side length of 24 metres, and its remaining walls rise to more than 9 metres, and are pierced by narrow openings for launching arrows. The entrance opens in the middle of the eastern wall, and is surmounted by some decorations carved into stone blocks, over which a ratchet has been erected. It is noted that two types of stones were used in this wall and the entrance that opened into it. The decoration engraved in the stone consists of an inscription placed between two decorative elements at the top and bottom, and mentions the name of the Ottoman Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent as a sponsor of the building. The upper decorative element consists of an eight-pointed star formed by the intersection of two squares with a circular disk in the middle. On either side of the star are decorations consisting of floral shapes and geometric patterns. The entrance leads to a rectangular courtyard measuring 19 m x 8 m, surrounded on two sides by ten rooms, including two perpendicular iwans. This distribution of rooms is repeated on the second floor, which is provided with a corridor 1 m wide.
