Notes
The top of this pendant from South India depicts two stylized peacocks facing a central rosette. The middle flower has seven diamond-encrusted petals with diamonds surrounding the central emerald. The back of the ornament is plain gold (not covered with enamel) and includes many markings, perhaps those of the previous owner. The rubies came from Myanmar (Burma), which was a known source of rubies arriving in Europe since the late fifteenth century.
