Notes Made of silk pile on a reeded ground with metallic threads, this prayer rug is part of a fine collection of Safavid Persian mihrab rugs. Most of the carpets preserved from this collection were intended to be presented as diplomatic gifts from the Safavid court to the Ottoman court. The Persian verses that adorn the edges of the carpet are written in Nasta'liq script and include the name of Sultan Murad. It is most likely that what is meant here is the Ottoman Sultan Murad III (r. 982-1003 AH / 1574-1595 AD).
