Notes This candelabra with a truncated body belongs to a group of lighting devices that were popular during the Middle Ages and passed from Egypt to Central Asia. Its design consists of interlaced medallions filled with arabesque-like patterns, smaller hot-forged medallions, and pairs of simple birds that emerge from the stems and are almost hidden within the scrolls of paper. The surface of the candelabra is completely engraved and inlaid with silver, and the remains of gold inlay confirm that such star-shaped medallions are eight-sided hot-forged or shaped. The smaller, hot-forged circular one was already prominent, and the elaborate and expensive technique gives this candlestick a multi-coloured, sparkling and shiny appearance, transforming it from a usable piece into a luxurious work of art for high-class homes, palaces or festive settings.
