Notes
Two pairs of rectangular ivory panels decorated with engraving. Two of the four panels bear floral decoration, including geometric motifs superimposed on a spiral leaf background. In the Mamluk period, compositions composed of geometric shapes with spiral or arabesque decoration were used on ivory pieces. The other two pieces bear inscriptions on a background of spiral geometric decoration. Clear nerves appear on the half-leaflets in the four panels. The inscription includes the name of Sultan Al-Nasir Muhammad ibn Qalawun (ruled 692-741/1293-1341). It appears that the pieces were either placed within the door of a building belonging to the Sultan, or within a piece of furniture belonging to him. Ivory was commonly used in combination with wood in doors, furnishings, and chests in Mamluk architecture and decorative arts.
