Notes The Bumiller collection includes a group of jug lids with animal or human motifs on one side. A piece like the one shown here is broken but the remaining portion of the circular hole for pulling the lid onto the jug handle is clearly visible. The upper end shows a hunter carrying a falcon in his right hand behind his back. The hunter with a falcon on horseback is a standard and common motif in all collections of materials and can be found in all types of metalwork, ceramics, ivory, fabrics, glass bottles and decanters from the ninth century AD onwards. It was originally intended as an emblem of royal authority or nobility and may have merely been a representation for the purpose of reminder in this daily used piece.
