Notes The piece is a multi-colored marble mosaic that decorated the interior walls of religious institutions and palaces in Egypt and Syria during the Mamluk era. This example is from an unknown building that may have decorated the lower strip of the wall, but similar mosaics also appear on the mihrab, arches, and even tombstones of that era. The interlaced tiles of contrasting colors that form the borders of this mosaic, as well as the basic rectangular panels underneath, are also a distinctive element of Mamluk architectural decoration.
