Notes
This one-page drawing depicts a resting lion, which appears to be sandwiched between two frames with golden lines and golden dots, which are positioned beneath Chinese clouds/veins and directly in front of the lion (as if coming out of the lion's open mouth). The inscription dates the engraving, and the gold borders are probably later additions. They surround the lion and are drawn on rectangles with a white ground with gold inscriptions, and are presumed to have been taken from the handles of the frames. The resting lion is attributed to the artist Moin. Mosafir, who was famous for his craftsmanship and for showing keen attention to detail in his drawings of animals. Trained by Reza Abbasi, Moin had a long working history and carried Reza Abbasi's artistic ideas and new styles of the 18th century. Drawing wild and exotic animals was not unusual at that time since the Safavid rulers showed great interest in them.
