Notes
In the doorjamb and dome of the Martorano House we find intricate decorative decoration. In contrast, the second and contemporary woodcut is located on site in Palermo. This is the main door of the Church of Santa Maria del Admiralio, built by Admiralio (Sea Prince) Giorgio di Antioquia in the year 537/1143. It is characterized by traditional decoration, consisting of rectangular inlays, resembling Egyptian works, dating between the eleventh and twelfth centuries. The middle section of these infills is surrounded by designs of plants, half-trunks of palm trees, and geometric shapes with opposite pentagonal sides, connected to circles in the form of a pearl necklace, forming a sixteen-pointed star, and within this surrounding are the shapes of other plants and palm trees. The method of this decoration is very similar to the decorations of Iraqi Samarra and the wooden ceiling of the Ibn Tulun Mosque in Cairo. Al-Sayyid Shiratu (1979) believes that this type of decoration is of Samurai origin.
