Notes The rainbow-hued symmetrical interweaving in Malawian fabrics is perhaps best seen in this example of finely woven kain limar and single-weft fabric - ikat/ikat, also known as kain limar or kain limau, which is produced primarily in the state of Terengganu and Kelantan on the east coast of the Malawi peninsula. While these fabrics are now associated with the Sultanate of Terengganu, in the past they were also part of the royal ceremonial costumes of the Riau and Linga archipelago, which lies between the Malawi Island and South Sumatra.
