Notes
Birds were a popular subject in the Abbasid period, as artists working in a variety of mediums transformed the beaks and wings of creatures into increasingly abstract designs. The symmetrical motif of two peacocks facing each other finds iconographic precedents in examples dating back to ancient times and Byzantine times, where they often had paradisiacal connotations. Examples of monochromatic luster paint such as these were characteristic of the second phase of Abbasid luster vessels developed in centers in Iraq in the 10th century. The word blessing appears in Arabic on the lower edge. Glazed for this bowl.
