Notes The work depicts lovers in close embrace with the brush of Moin Musawwar, one of the most famous and prolific Iranian painters of the 17th century. Young lover couples were a fairly common theme in his time and exist in countless variations. The current version is sexually charged, depicting a young Georgian (distinguished by his fur hat) embracing a young Persian woman. Confident, she stops the demanding gesture of his left hand. Additional evidence is available to date the work as enlarged calligraphy, characteristic of 17th-century drawings. There are known to be about 12 extant brush drawings of Moin; Often, the same color combination consisting of red, green and yellow as well as black ink appears. Moin is known for his rather conservative style, remaining true throughout his 60-year career, to the style established by Reza Abbasi at the beginning of the 17th century. Therefore, European motifs are very rare in his works. However, in this work he incorporated not only a set piece likely stemming from European images and prints – the symmetrically divided, border-raised curtain – but also an old woman looking through a door. The theme of the uninvited observer was very popular in Iran, especially in the 19th century, making it one of the earliest representations of this particular type of image.
