Notes In North Africa, urban pottery production was an exclusive occupational field for male potters. The vessels made on wheels and glazed by them were manufactured in specialized workshops designated for sale. In rural areas, pottery making was almost entirely done at home, and people produced a wide variety of unglazed pottery vessels for domestic use, such as storage vessels and containers for food and liquids. Village women produced their pottery mainly to meet the needs of their families or for local exchange, which allowed them to obtain grains or other items by bartering with their neighbors, and they decorated their products with complex, interwoven geometric patterns associated with fertility and abundance. Currently, Moroccan ceramics handmade by women have disappeared.
